Frequently Asked Questions

Want to know more about Stelo and what we do? Check out the following FAQs.

What is Stelo?

Stelo is an arts and culture non-profit 501c3 private operating family foundation. We are operated by a family board of directors, a paid advisory council, core staff of three, and seasonal programming staff.

What is a residency?

We define a residency as a relationship between artists and Stelo, where we support artists in varied ways. Sometimes that looks like providing a place to stay, sometimes it looks like being taught a new craft, sometimes that looks like paying for fabricators to assist in making a new artwork. Each of our residency programs is structured in a different way to provide specific, responsive support to artists.

Why do you offer residencies?

We offer residencies because we believe that the process of making art needs more support in the world. We provide space and funding to artists so that they can focus on their work, experiment, and try out ideas.

What residency programs do you offer? How do I apply?

Every year we offer a different mix of residency programs. We typically have 1-3 open calls per year for residencies that are juried. Subscribe to our e-newsletter and follow us on social media to get updates on when we have open calls.

How are artists selected for residencies?

Artists are selected for residencies by being invited, and by application. For our invitational residencies our board and advisory council nominate artists, and for our application based residencies rotating juries review submissions. If you have applied and not received an opportunity in the past, we welcome you to reapply as our jury panel changes for each opportunity.

How do I partner with Stelo?

Our partnership inquiries for 2023 are currently closed as we are at capacity with our commitments. When we reopen our call for new partners you can submit a partnership application form on our website.

Do you rent your flex space out to artists and/or community orgs?

We do not currently rent out our flex space to artists and/or community orgs.

What’s a flex space?

Our flex space can be rearranged in different ways for different types of programs. Some examples of different types of programs are community meals, conversations, exhibitions, sound performances, and workshops. For each of these examples we would set up our space to best respond to what is needed to make the program successful and welcoming.

I would like to visit Stelo. How do I do that?

Check to see if we have a program or exhibition on view on our website, where we will list our current open hours where you can drop by. Otherwise send an email to info@steloarts.org to discuss a visit with our staff.

How do I find out about Stelo’s public programs?

Sign up for our e-newsletter on our website, and check our social media pages on Instagram and Facebook for program updates.

What’s a public program?

A public program is an event that is open to the public. We strive to have free, accessible, and welcoming events that foster community and conversation.
