Artist & Curator Talk
Ronny Quevedo with Theo and Nancy Downes-Le Guin
Stelo Arts
Friday, July 10th | 4PM - 5PM
Join us for an intimate conversation to delve deeper into the vision behind our current exhibition, scrimmage. We are welcoming artist Ronny Quevedo alongside curators Theo and Nancy Downes-Le Guin for a discussion exploring the conceptual roots and creative process behind the installation.
This engaging talk will offer profound insight into Quevedo's background and the historical references woven throughout his art. Together, the artist and curators will unpack the layers of the exhibition, discussing how gestures from familiar games like basketball and the Mesoamerican ballgame serve as powerful metaphors for migration, memory, and cultural expression.
About the Curator
Theo Downes-Le Guin is literary executor for author Ursula K. Le Guin and heads the Ursula K. Le Guin Foundation. Through programs such as an annual prize for fiction, the Foundation continues Le Guin’s legacy of supporting writers and readers of science fiction and fantasy, literary fiction and poetry. Downes-Le Guin also consults on adaptations of Ursula Le Guin’s work.
Downes-Le Guin founded a contemporary art gallery in Portland, Oregon, and has curated and co-curated exhibitions in galleries, art fairs, museums and online. Prior to working in the arts, he led research programs in the technology industry and in public policy at the RAND Corporation, Intel and Doxus/Market Strategies. He holds degrees in art history and applied social research methods and has served on various not-for-profit boards including Literary Arts.
About Ronny Quevedo
Ronny Quevedo was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador and lives and works in New York, NY. Quevedo’s practice spans installation, drawings, and prints, incorporating and subverting aspects of abstraction, painting, collage, cartography, and sports imagery. Deeply engaged with notions of identity, Quevedo reenvisions pre- and post-colonial iconographies. The recuperation of Indigenous languages of abstraction, revalorization of their associated labor, and centering of a living connection between contemporary and centuries-old cultural markers are foundational to Quevedo’s ongoing practice.
