Zena Zezza | LOOKING, REALLY LOOKING! The films of Chantal Akerman

c3 is thrilled to be an artist project season partner
to with Zena Zezza to present a program of films and discourse curated by Sandra Percival. The current programmatic arc centers around the work of artist and filmmaker Chantal Akerman.
LOOKING, REALLY LOOKING! The Films of Chantal Akerman 1968-2015 is a film and performative program which surveys the work of the Belgian/French artist and filmmaker Chantal Akerman and places it within a conceptual, thematic, and historical context at the intersection of film and contemporary art. Akerman, whose work defies easy categorization, is often placed within feminist, queer, Jewish, and avant-garde circles, yet her oeuvre moves across genres from fiction to the documentary/essay, musical and multi-media installations. Seen in historical and avant-garde circles from the US and Western Europe to the Middle East and South America, Akerman (1950-2015) presents us with complexities and doubts in a body of work that spans nearly fifty years and revolves around her family history, identity, memory and displacement, often portrayed in long takes within the modest aesthetics of everyday life.

Among the season’s highlights, March through May, 2017 —
• Films prescient to unresolved histories and current provocations on race and immigration
• Performative events and films on the emotive power of music to transcend history and geography
• Staged reading performances of Akerman’s writings on intimate portraits of daily life, familial relationships and emotions that cross generations
• Screening of Chantal Akerman's last film, "No Home Movie" voted by New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis as the #1 Best Movie of 2016

We at Stelo humbly acknowledge that our programming is being held on the traditional lands of the Multnomah, Kathlamet, Clackamas, bands of Chinook, Tualatin Kalapuya, Molalla and many other Tribes who made their homes along the Columbia (Wimahl) and Willamette (Whilamut) rivers.

We offer respectful recognition to the Native communities in our region, and to those who have stewarded this land throughout the generations. Please consider the many legacies of violence, displacement, migration, and settlement that bring us together here today. We recognize the continual displacement of Native people by the United States and are committed to working to dismantle the ongoing effects of this settler colonial legacy. Please join us in respecting the contributions Indigenous peoples have, and continue to make to our community, country, and world.
