What are the ties that bind us? These are some of the questions that Cannupa Hanska Luger and Marie Watt have been talking through via their joint residency with Stelo. As we celebrate the culmination of their multi-year residency, you are invited to the exhibition Gather, on view at Stelo August 13 - November 27, 2022. Visitors to the Stelo flex space will engage with pieces from Luger and Watt’s individual art practices, as well as their first collaborative art work, Each/Other. Watt and Luger merged their practices to create this sculpture with hundreds of people from around the world. The artists asked participants to embroider messages while considering “if acts of collaboration help heal broken bonds with the environment and with each other.” During the exhibition, Stelo will host public programs relating to themes that have emerged throughout the residency. Demos: Wapato Correctional Facility probes the many concerns that the vacant jail suggests: breakdowns in democracy, prevailing power structures and others. The project's title takes its meaning from various interpretations of the word "demos". The Greek word "demos" (pronounced "day-moss"), refers to the "village" or "people." In English, "demo", is used as a shorthand for "demonstration", as reference to the "demo mix-tape", or as the vernacular for "demolition". In this instance, it is a low residency program that connects the invited residents, Joy Feasley + Paul Swenbeck, to our community through partnerships with fabricators, materials suppliers, and other creatives, with the intention of installing 3-4 restrooms between our Camp Colton and Park Block campuses. In 2020 we acquired a residential apartment above our Park Block space. The apartment has invited us to think collectively about what a residency space needs, and more importantly, what the artists need within that space. How can a space be responsive, generous, alive, and supportive? What residual energy, objects, concepts are infused in place when one guest leaves and another arrives? We are most concerned with the human experience, and are thinking of the residency space more like a home than a hotel. We believe this type of co-creation can contribute to harm reduction, community building, and transformation of relationship between our institution and the creatives with whom we engage. These containers currently feature a variety of grasses, shrubs, and other perennials that can be utilized for ink + dye making, as well as fibers for papermaking. In this instance, it is a low residency program that connected the invited residents, Joy Feasley + Paul Swenbeck, to our community through partnerships with fabricators, materials suppliers, and other creatives, with the intention of installing 3-4 restrooms between our Camp Colton and Park Block campuses. In 2020 we acquired a residential apartment above our Park Block space. The apartment has invited us to think collectively about what a residency space needs, and more importantly, what the artists need within that space. How can a space be responsive, generous, alive, and supportive?
